Canada to Key West Paddle – Day 46

She remembered the older pictures very well, but the more recent ones, that is, those in the 80’s and 90’s weren’t sparking any memory, though she did recognize the pictures and the people, she had not connection to them or why they would be there. For instance, I had a picture of her and her brother (now deceased) at her father’s funeral. She recognized her brother and the location, but didn’t know her Dad had passed.

A Bike Shop that is changing the world

In the tiny town of Hampton, NY lies a Bike Shop that is changing the world. I'd been living in Poultney, a small traditional Vermont town, for four years before leaving on my kayak trip

I want to ride my bicycle…

I hadn't been Motor Free since I was 11. By 11 years old, I had earned enough money working to go buy myself a Mini Bike and thus ended my bicycling days. The Mini bike turned into a dirt bike turned into a car, truck, motorcycle and so forth. Somewhere in all of that progress, I got the idea to get back into bicycling.

A Midnight Train

This trip was to be no different. While I had decided to head to the Florida Keys since ending my kayak expedition early, I had no idea how I was going to get down there. It wasn’t until I bought a bicycle to get around in Vermont that I started to play with the idea of biking down, but after looking at the cost factor involved in that, it would be as expensive as flying and I was trying to avoid expensive.

Adventure precedes Adventure

As the clouds covered what little moon there was, we sat floating in the darkness of night in the middle of the water when suddenly we heard it. CHUFF! Looking toward the sound, we heard it again, CHUFF! There in the distance, we saw then, glowing in this bioluminescent water - dolphins swimming toward us.

Right Back where I started from

I made an announcement on Facebook and the “Welcome Home” messages began arriving, but there was a problem. I wasn’t home. This wasn’t home. Home is where your heart is, right? So where is my heart. I walked around; I visited with my neighbors whom I use to spend so much time with. I walked into my old room. Saw the basement I had worked so hard renovating, all finished. I walked down to the water, the water I had missed so much. This wasn’t home. This is where I use to live and perhaps this will be where I spend a few months as I work things through, but home, no, its not here.

One Year Homeless – One Year Free

Over and over these people prove the news to be wrong. The world is full of good, no - great people. People that open up their homes and hearts and welcome in a stranger, but it doesn't end there. Not only am I...

To walk a mile in my shoes

The idiom is: Before you judge a man, walk a mile in his shoes. The meaning: Before judging someone, you must understand his experiences, challenges, thought processes, etc. Earlier this year I struggled to accept the...

Canada to Key West Paddle – Day 15

I arrived amid a sea of Motor Yachts in all shapes and sizes. I’ve never seen so many boats packed in so tightly in a Marina. This looked like a major party – and it was. I found a spot to tie off and I climbed up on the docks. I hadn’t been on the dock a minute when I met Katie’s Dad. Like me, he was surprised at how quickly I made it here, but running with the tied helped a lot.
