With the gear and kayak loaded up last night, Arlene and I awoke to what should have been an easy morning, but as always happens, there are things you forget and sure enough I forgot to wrap up some e-mails and tasks before we hit the road. I was scrambling to get out of the house and we didn’t hit the road till after 10am, an hour behind schedule.

Canada to Key West Paddle – Day 46
She remembered the older pictures very well, but the more recent ones, that is, those in the 80’s and 90’s weren’t sparking any memory, though she did recognize the pictures and the people, she had not connection to them or why they would be there. For instance, I had a picture of her and her brother (now deceased) at her father’s funeral. She recognized her brother and the location, but didn’t know her Dad had passed.
Canada to Key West Paddle – Day 45
I started off the day doing some investigative research into Elana’s past while Arlene attended a Real Estate closing. I’m trying to locate anyone who may have been friends with Elana when she was a little younger. I’m still searching for the period of time after she got married and before her husband passed. Unfortunately, all my leads were dead ends.
Canada to Key West Paddle – Day 44
Upon arriving we headed to the Beluga Whale exhibit were we got to see two Beluga’s playing in the water in front of us. Tinier than I had imagined, but still large enough to make me worry if I encountered them in the surf where I’m kayaking, but luckily they are Arctic and Sub Arctic mammals, but even so, would probably not be interested in me or my kayak.
Canada to Key West Paddle – Day 43
I’ve made some decisions on the relaunch. It will happen the middle of next week and I am going to take the inside passage aka, Bay Side. This means that I won’t have a continuous paddle to Key West, but will have to portage the kayak over portions of land where one bay ends and another begins.
Canada to Key West Paddle – Day 42
Approaching her room, I found her in a wheelchair in her doorway. I asked her name and there she was. I introduced myself and she invited me in. We sat, talked for a moment and I asked her if I could record our conversation. She agreed and so it began.
Canada to Key West Paddle – Day 41
Looking back at my journey so far, most every day has been wonderful. Sure, there have been some challenges, a little bad weather and times when I wondered; What the Hell Am I Doing.
Canada to Key West Paddle – Day 39 /40 (Opportunity Knocks)
August 9th & 10th 2016 Yorktown Heights, NY My contacts around Sandy Hook are growing and so both the proverbial tide is changing as well as the real tide. Both are good news for me and soon I will be able to re-launch and continue my journey. In the meantime, I’m hanging out here in Yorktown…
Canada to Key West Paddle – Day 38
I was trying to decide what to discuss today as it was a day of helping Arlene move some boxes, then it came to me – via e-mail. I had sent out some emails looking for support in New Jersey and I’d gotten some nice replies and now have a few people working with me to come up with solutions, but the email I got was an alert that someone had mentioned this blog.
Canada to Key West Paddle – Day 37
If I could paddle 30 miles in a day, I could make it in one trip. The longest I think I’ve been able to accomplish with this heavy kayak is 20 with the wind on my back and tide in my favor. Running down the coastline now will be a bit harder as the tide will be trying to pull me out or push me in and won’t be running with me so I doubt I will be able to do more than ten to fifteen miles in a day.
