Of all the things one needs to do on a Van Conversion, I believe that wiring is the most challenging. Unlike like years ago, our vehicle wiring today carries computer signals and information in addition to voltage. We can’t simply splice into a wire or cut it and redirect it as that wire is probably connected to at least one if not multiple computers placed throughout the vehicles body. Because of this, changing, adding or eliminating certain items requires a lot of patience, a lot of research and a lot of dismantling of the bodies interior panels.
In this first part I am hooking up the Factory “Upfitter switches” which should be as simple as plug and play – it is not. In fact, energizing the upfitter switches proved to be the least bang for the buck. I would advise all to forego this option. I’m not even sure they will be used, but I have them wired and ready should we chose to in the future now.
At the same time, I am wiring in the Security System, the Front and Rear Dash Cameras, replacing a 12v Port with USB ports, Hard Wiring the Cell Phone mount, relocating the heated seat controllers and installing the wiring for the new – never before done, Electronic Parking Brake Controller which will eliminate the large bulky Emergency Brake between the seats. I’ll also add some 3M Thinsulate and a Thermal Break above the headliner.
